Demand Generation

How do you generate qualified leads?

To generate qualified leads, you need to target your ideal customer precisely, combine the right acquisition channels and agree with your sales teams on what a lead “ready to be worked” looks like. A good lead is a lead that becomes an opportunity.

This is the logic of demand generation designed for pipeline.

 What is a qualified lead?

A qualified lead is a contact who matches your ideal target (industry, company size, job function) and has shown real interest in your offer. What sets it apart from a simple contact is these two dimensions: fit with your target and intent.

MQL and SQL: two levels of qualification

Not every lead showing interest is ready for sales. The key is to identify when marketing engagement becomes a genuine sales opportunity.

01
MARKETING QUALIFIED LEAD MQL

An MQL has shown interest through marketing actions: downloading content, registering for a webinar, or making repeat visits.

STATUS Not yet ready to buy
→ QUALIFICATION
02
SALES QUALIFIED LEAD SQL

An SQL has been validated as a real opportunity, ready to be worked by a rep.

STATUS Ready for sales
THE CHALLENGE

Move the right MQLs to SQL stage while keeping reps' time focused on qualified opportunities.

How do you qualify your leads?

Lead qualification rests on two families of criteria.

Fit criteria check that the lead matches your ideal customer profile (ICP). Intent criteria measure their level of interest and engagement. Methods such as BANT (budget, authority, need, timeline) help reps structure this assessment.

Beyond a certain volume, manual qualification is no longer enough. A scoring system assigns points based on the lead’s profile and behaviour, so that those most likely to convert rise to the top automatically.

5 levers for generating qualified leads

1

Define your ideal customer precisely

Without a clear ICP, every acquisition effort gets scattered. The ICP is the starting point of any acquisition strategy.
2
Combine the right channels

Outbound prospecting, inbound marketing, account-based marketing, partners: the right mix depends on your sales cycle, your target and your growth stage.

3
Produce content that is useful to your buyers

Content that addresses your target's real problems attracts more qualified contacts than a generic campaign.

4
Optimise your website's conversion
Every page on your website should guide the qualified visitor towards getting in touch.
5
Respond quickly to inbound leads
A qualified lead loses value as the response time grows longer. Clear routing rules and follow-up times make a big difference.

Buying leads: the limits of the approach

Part of the market offers to sell you leads that are already qualified. The solution is fast but limited: these contacts have not shown interest in your offer in particular, they are often sold to several companies, and their conversion remains uncertain.

Bought pipeline dries up as soon as you stop buying, whereas a demand generation strategy builds value over time.

Smarketing, the key to conversion

Smarketing refers to the alignment between marketing and sales. Qualified leads are often lost at this junction: marketing hands over contacts that reps consider immature, reps do not call them back, and each side blames the other for poor results.

Effective alignment rests on three elements:

  • A shared definition of a qualified lead
  • Handover commitments, with response times
  • A feedback loop, so that sales tells marketing which leads convert and which do not

Measuring the contribution to pipeline

The number of leads generated is a misleading metric. The useful metrics are the qualified pipeline created and the revenue that results from it. They are complemented by conversion rates at each stage, cost per lead weighed against lead quality, and the contribution of marketing to pipeline.

The goal is pipeline that turns into revenue.
